A concrete commitment to the local area

The decision to partner with OlivaMi—an initiative forming part of a broader environmental sustainability plan adopted by Biografilm—was driven by the importance of preserving the olive tree. As one of the fruit-bearing plants with the greatest potential for CO2 absorption, it contributes significantly to offsetting our event’s emissions. Furthermore, the Festival supports the goal of regenerating an Italian region—specifically the Salento area—that has been severely affected by the Xylella epidemic. By promoting the planting of olive trees, Biografilm aims to foster biodiversity and sustainability through a renewed approach to our land and agricultural work—a resilient and essential heritage to be passed on to future generations.

The story of the project

Biografilm is a film festival dedicated to life stories; since 2005, it has spent ten days each June in Bologna showcasing the best in Italian and international documentary and quality fiction films, with a special focus on highlighting female and emerging talent. In addition to the many well-known stories and lesser-known life tales—which deserve to be shared through screenings in cinemas and at evocative open-air venues across the city—Biografilm offers multidisciplinary events, gatherings, and educational and professional development opportunities for both the general public and industry professionals. Promoting film culture as a tool for inclusion and dialogue across different communities and generations is a core objective of Biografilm, pursued over the years by building networks and collaborations with organizations and associations active both locally in Bologna and nationwide. Environmental preservation stands out among the values promoted by Biografilm; the festival has implemented best practices to achieve tangible goals, limiting waste and striving to reduce its environmental impact. Furthermore, the Festival is committed to narrowing the gender gap and promoting gender equality, both within its team and in the selection of works to be showcased. To this end, it has signed the Code of Ethical Conduct for the Audiovisual Sector—a preventive tool created by the non-profit association WIFTM Italia to safeguard the dignity of workers in the audiovisual industry. Alongside its public-facing program, the Festival also hosts an event dedicated to industry professionals: Bio to B – Industry Days. This annual Biografilm event facilitates business-to-business networking among audiovisual professionals, aiming to promote and support Italian and European documentary productions by helping them secure co-productions, sales agents, international distribution, partners, and festival slots.
