Xylella has wiped out Salento's landscape, jobs, culture and oil.

Over the past five years, the Xylella bacterium has destroyed Salento's olive groves:

More than 21 million olive trees have been destroyed, making the land barren and destined to become desert.

More than 5,000 farmers lost not only their jobs but also history and traditions.

Due to deforestation, the pollution rate has increased by 8 percent.

Italian olive oil production has decreased by 50 percent (Puglia accounted for 49 percent).

Xylella is a bacterium that clogs the lymph vessels of olive trees, preventing the circulation of sap and leading in 4-5 months to the death of the olive tree.

What is Xylella Fastidiosa?

Xylella Fastidiosa , commonly known as Xylella, is a bacterium that spreads in the plant's lymphatic vessels, i.e. the vessels responsible for the supply of water and mineral salts.

How does it act in plants?

The bacterium creates a dense gelatinous mucilage that clogs the vessels, preventing sap and other nutrients from flowing into the plant's lymph vessels, which are critical for hydration of the leaf canopy. This causes typical desiccation of the plant.

Are there any solutions?

The main solution is to plant varieties resistant to the bacterium, such as Leccino and Favolosa. This seems to be the best remedy because it has a positive impact both economically and in terms of landscape.

What do we do in Olivami?

Through theadoption of olive trees, we raise the funds needed to purchase new plants to donate to farmers

Donated olive trees (resistant to Xylella) are planted by farmers, replacing dry ones

We support the farmers who will grow them by buying extra virgin olive oil from them, which we will periodically ship to you or you can pick up at the mill

We protect biodiversity by surrounding our olive groves with native species (fig, prickly pear, laurel, strawberry tree,…)

On our own we can't do it, we need your help too!

More than 6,000 people have already signed up and 50 companies have created their own gardens.

Your help is also essential to ensure a future for our land.

    Who are we?

We are a nonprofit association, registered with RUNTS (single national third sector register), composed of a group of young people who love their land and believe in Salento and its ability to recover from a tragic epidemic crisis. We founded Olivami moved by the desire to leave to our children what our grandparents and parents left to us.

    1. To fight against Xylella

In the last 5 years, over 21 million olive trees have disappeared, destroyed by Xylella and over 5,000 olive growers have lost fields, jobs and traditions, reducing the production of Salento oil by 80%.

    2. To reduce the environmental impact .

Over the past 5 years, the pollution rate has increased by 8% . Each hectare of olive trees removes 9.5 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year. That is about 730 Kg of CO2 per year for each olive tree.

    3. To offer a true EVO oil

We want to return to offering our organic extra virgin olive oil , with verified quality and origin, produced with cutting-edge techniques that allow us to have zero environmental impact .

With your adoption you will help a farmer plant new olive trees.

Adopt an olive tree, contribute to the reforestation of Salento!

Support our project, join the reconstruction of Salento and leave your mark. You can participate in the olive harvest and visit your tree or olive grove whenever you wish.

Adopt an Olive Tree: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the adoption fee single or annual?

The adoption fee is ANNUAL , but you can decide to renew the adoption at the time of the deadline. Renewal is done manually. We will notify you of the deadline about ten days in advance by email.

Where are my olive trees planted?

The new Olive Trees are being planted in the province of Lecce, in the area of Carpignano Salentino, Martano, Borgagne, Melendugno, Otranto and Maglie, where several farms operate that have joined the Olivami initiative.

What name can I give to my tree?

You can name it however you like: with your name, the name of a loved one, a fancy name, the name of a place or what it symbolizes for you (happiness, freedom, peace, etc.). If you adopt more than one olive tree, you may decide to assign a single name to the entire olive grove or one name for each tree, dividing them with a comma or hyphen. When it comes to a gift usually the adopted tree is assigned the recipient’s name or nickname. The name of the olive tree will appear on the adoption certificate and on the plaque hanging on the tree, along with the first and last name of the person who adopted it or who will receive it as a gift.

When will I receive the oil?

The shipment of the oil will take place approximately during the harvest period, ie from October to December , but if you need it immediately we can send it even earlier. It will be sufficient to send us an email to the following address: info.olivami@gmail.com . We will package your oil accurately and safely, to get the product to arrive in top condition.

What am I entitled to for each adoption?

Depending on the adoption plan you choose (Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum) you will receive a certain amount of Organic EVO oil, which will vary in the following years. With the Basic plan you will receive 1 liter of oil for the first 3 years, while for the next two years you will be entitled to 1.5 liters of oil, rising to 2 liters per olive tree past the first 6 years. It is also possible to add liters of oil to those already present in the basic plan : just select the quantity, which will be added to those already provided. At the time of adoption, we will send you a certificate showing your name and the location of your tree (so you can visit them whenever you wish).

Can I give one or more olive trees as a gift?

Of course. It is possible to give one or more olive trees as a gift . Just select, in the plan sheet, the option “ it’s a gift “. At that point you can enter the recipient’s name and surname, indicate his e-mail address (so that he can receive the communication of the gift), a personalized message, and the date of delivery of the gift.
