Every morning, a Salento native wakes up and decides which way to go, depending on the wind: the Adriatic Coast or the Ionian Coast of Salento?
In the Salento region, there’s a basic rule: when the Tramontana blows, head to the Ionian Sea, because the water tends to be calm, whereas when the sirocco blows,the Adriatic Sea is the better choice.

1. Gallipoli
Also known asthe “Pearl of the Ionian Sea,”this seaside resort on the Ionian coast of Salento captivates visitors with its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views. Divided into two parts—the old town and the new town—Gallipoli offers a fascinating blend of history and modernity. Churches: On Via Duomo stands the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, dedicated to the patron saint of Gallipoli. Inside, visitors can admire the twelve Baroque altars, numerous paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the ancient relics of several saints.

3. Santa Maria al Bagno

If you enjoy walking, the coastal promenade along Via Emanuele Filiberto offers a magnificent view of the sea. You can visit “L’acquario del Salento,” a museum where you can discover the treasures of the sea and more, the “eclectic” Art Nouveau and Liberty-style villas from the early 20th century, and the Quattro Colonne, the remains of an ancient fortification.
