text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>21 million<\/strong> dead trees destroyed by the bacterium also means a reduction in major sources of carbon dioxide absorption: most of the CO2 in the atmosphere is absorbed by trees through the process of <\/span><strong><i>chlorophyll photosynthesis<\/i>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olive trees have a very high absorption capacity: in fact, it is estimated that each olive tree is able to absorb about 600 kg of <strong>CO2<\/strong> per year, about 2 kg per day.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221; text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In monetary terms, on the other hand, the Xylella attack has resulted in damages of around <strong>20 billion euros<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This massive damage to the economy and society results from several factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduction in olive oil production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The loss of jobs of many local farmers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closure of numerous oil mills and farms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The devaluation of land where olive groves were planted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apulia was the leading producer of olive oil in Italy, so much so that it was able to meet about<strong> 50 percent of the national demand<\/strong>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text woodmart_inline=&#8221;no&#8221; text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the Xylella attack, regional production has dropped by more than 80 percent compared to previous years.
